As fans of Emily Henry's bestselling novel "Book Lovers," we are thrilled to learn that the heartwarming and subversive romantic comedy is set to hit the big screen. Tango, Lia Buman's film and television development financier and producer, has picked up the movie rights, and Sarah Heyward, known for her work on "Girls" and "Modern Love," is attached to write the script.
The novel has sold over one million copies in the U.S. and follows Nora, a cutthroat literary agent, who keeps running into Charlie, a bookish, brooding editor, during an August holiday in North Carolina. What follows is a delightful story of two broken people trying to open themselves up enough to be truly known.
"There has been a lot of 'rom com films are dead' talk over the last few years even though absolutely everyone I know is desperate for them." - Emily Henry
Emily Henry, the author of "Book Lovers," shared her excitement about the project on Instagram, saying, "I’m so glad they understand why this kind of movie is important. It’s not about a formula, any more than any other film. It’s not even really about a ‘happy ending.’ It’s about the fact that sometimes our world is shitty. It’s unpredictable and terrifying and cruel, and we constantly have to find ways to hold joy in our hearts even when we’re tired, grieving, or angry. This kind of story matters deeply to me because it’s all about that hope: that no matter how bad things get, there is a force on earth that makes life brilliant, beautiful, and worth living. Love is what holds us together when everything falls apart."
"This movie is going to funny, cozy, moving, and messy. I can’t wait." - Emily Henry
We couldn't agree more. "Book Lovers" is not just any romantic comedy; it's a story that reminds us of the power of love and the hope that it brings, even in the darkest of times. We can't wait to see how Tango brings this beloved story to life on the big screen, and we know it's going to be something special.
Tango, which had a banner year with the Oscar-nominated "Aftersun," is sure to deliver another hit with "Book Lovers." We are excited to see Emily Henry's vision come to life and look forward to the release of this film. Stay tuned for more updates on this upcoming project.
