If you’re looking to venture into non fiction but you don’t want anything too complicated, this is definitely for you. This is Going to Hurt is a book filled with real diary entries from Adam Kay’s time as a doctor on the NHS front line. They range from graphic to heartbreaking to hilarious, and I loved every single entry. It made it all the more real that these diary entries weren’t written to be published as a book - at the time they were just a way of keeping sane, and after leaving the profession years later Adam Kay came up with the idea of publishing. This made it all the more gut wrenching and definitely added value to the book.
I laughed out loud more times than I could count, and probably cried that many too. The diary entries are hilarious and yet so so vulnerable, and have totally changed my view of the NHS, and of all my friends who are training to be medics (what a road they’ve got ahead of them!). Such a good read for coronavirus times as well when our NHS has been stretched even further to breaking point. Big respect.
I can totally see why this has won so many awards, and it definitely definitely deserves them. I truly would recommend this to anyone at all and I normally am very person-specific with my book recs, so this book really is just fab! Definitely going to be up there with my best non fiction of the year I’d say.
